Coronavirus In Record-Breaking Southern States and Younger People Increasingly Testing Positive

TOPLINE: A rising number of kids are testing positive for coronavirus in southern U.S. states where new cases still shatter records, including Florida and Texas, with officials blaming a scarcity of social distancing, moreover as increased testing.

  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned more people in their 20s and 30s are testing positive, but are mostly asymptomatic, while they're also being tested more because the state, where there was a record 4,049 cases on Saturday, opens up.
  • “Our cases are shifting in an exceedingly radical direction younger,” he said at a news conference.
  • Infections are on the up among youth in parts of Texas and Georgia, in line with local health officials who reported similar trends to CNN.
  • The chief medical man at Georgia’s largest hospital, Dr. Robert Jansen, told the local press that he was seeing more patients within the 20s and 30s: “What frightens me isn't only that they're younger, the potential of them infecting others, particularly parents and grandparents.”
  • On Friday, officials in South Carolina warned that a rising number of individuals under 30 were testing positive for coronavirus, with a politician at the government department of health saying that the increase shows “younger South Carolinians aren't taking social distancing seriously.”
  • It comes because the U.S. recorded 31,600 cases on Friday, exceeding the 30,000 thresholds for the primary time since May.
  • Meanwhile, ER doctor Megan Ranney told CNN that Saturday’s Trump rally in Tulsa could become a “super spreader event,” as thousands attended the BOK center event.
  • Despite the venue being visibly under-capacity, some 6,200 visitors were packed closely together and pictures of the event show little to no social distancing passed off.


Ranney said of Saturday’s rally: “If there has been even a pair of cases within the arena last night, we’re presumably visiting see an expansion among folks that attended. so they’re visiting return to their states and it’s visiting spread further.”


Tulsa emerged jointly of the most recent coronavirus hotspots within the U.S., with town recording a record number of cases within the days leading up to President Trump’s rally.

WHAT to observe FOR

The CDC could soon update its guidance on facemasks. The agency is concluding a scientific review to live how effective they're in preventing the spread of coronavirus, a senior official with knowledge of the review told CNN. The CDC recommends that Americans wear face coverings either after they leave their homes, or at the very least, where social distancing isn't possible.


U.S. infections are now at quite 2.25 million, in keeping with Johns Hopkins University data.


Trump admitted during the Tulsa rally on Saturday that he wanted officials to hamper testing within the U.S. as infections rose, calling it a “double-edged sword”. “When you are doing testing to its extent, you are going to seek out more people; you are going to search out more cases,” he told 6,200 spectators. Nearly 120,000 people within the U.S. have died after falling ill with the virus.
